COMMANDER'S NEWSLETTER
MAY–JUNE 2026
Greetings AL Post 40,
Before I begin this year’s message, let me congratulate the new members of the Post leadership and thank those who served previously for their untiring dedication and service to the Post and the community.
This past year has been filled with meaningful events for the Post — from the opening of the CVETS thrift store, flag ceremonies at both the Post and the new high school, the visit by the National Commander, Legion Baseball, fundraising and raffles and many other events to support our organization. None of it would have been possible without our incredible volunteers.

Whether you helped plan an event, served food, cleaned up, made phone calls, or simply showed up to lend a hand, your support is deeply appreciated. It's your commitment that keeps Post 40 strong and makes a real difference in the lives of our veterans and their families.

As we look ahead, I want to remind everyone of one of the most important dates on our calendar: Memorial Day – Monday, May 25th, 2026. This is a time for us to come together to honor and mourn all who gave their lives in service to our 250-year-old nation. I expect the turnout from the community to be quite large this year, so I hope many of you from the entire Post family can help out again this year. I thank you in advance for your efforts.
Looking even further ahead to Veterans Day, we are partnering with our local schools, the public library, the Scouts, the DAR, and other local groups for a Christmas Cards to Veterans Program. Our goal is to send a card with a personal Christmas wish to every veteran in VA hospitals, assisted living and nursing homes in the state.

And lastly, I’d like to welcome the new members of the Legion Family who joined us this year. Your American Legion experience depends on you and your involvement. Ask questions, show up at events. We have many places to get involved. As many or as few as you wish. If you don’t understand something, ask the question. If you have new ideas for something, bring them up, let’s discuss it and see if it can work for us. My pledge to you and all of Post 40 is to be as available to you as much as possible. I will always answer emails and phone calls. If I don’t know the answer to a question, I’ll give it my best shot to try and find it.

Summer is right around the corner. My wish to all of you is a happy, safe, and healthy summer filled with joy and relaxation. May the season bring bright, sunny moments, refreshing adventures, and great memories to share with your fellow Veterans, friends and loved ones.

With the warmest regards,
Ed Mathews, Commander
